The Sirius is installed with a series inertial damping field generators, which create a forcefield around the vessel. That absorbs the inertial stress created when the ship accelerates to high impulse speed or warp drive. Without the IDF the high gee-forces would instantly crush the crew.

The inertial damping field generators also create the structural integrity field, which helps reinforce the structure of the ship.
